Story
A bouquet fills the surface with roses, dahlias, and sprigs of baby's breath, clustered together against a glowing yellow and pink background. The blooms seem to melt into their setting rather than stand apart from it, as petals and backdrop share the same warm tones. This piece was made in 1916, rendered in oil on fabric, and it is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It entered the collection through the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Odilon Redon, who lived from 1840 to 1916 and was French, worked within Symbolism, a movement concerned with suggestion and inner feeling rather than exact description. Worth noticing is how the soft edges of the flowers blur into the colored haze around them, giving the whole composition a sense of glow rather than sharp outline.
