Story

Angular buildings in red and purple tones rise amid green hills and shadowy stretches of forest, set beneath a sky thick with clouds. The scene balances geometric structures against the organic curves of the land, giving the whole a quiet, structural tension. This oil painting was created in 1915 by Oscar Bluemner, a Prussian-born American artist who worked as both draftsperson and painter. Bluemner lived from 1867 to 1938. The piece belongs to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
