Composition III

Story

Overlapping geometric shapes fill the canvas in a dense arrangement of red, blue, yellow, green, purple, white, and black, each form pressing against the next without a single focal point. The piece is an oil painting completed in 1916. Patrick Henry Bruce (1881–1936), an American painter, worked within cubism, building this composition from fractured planes and layered color rather than recognizable subject matter. It is held at the Yale University Art Gallery.
