Story

Rectangles stack and shift beside tilted cylinders and curved shapes, their colors ranging through teal, blue, purple, red, yellow, gray, black, and white in a tightly layered arrangement. The composition sits flat and abstract, with forms overlapping rather than receding into depth. Patrick Henry Bruce (1881–1936), an American painter, made this piece in oil and graphite on canvas in 1917, working within cubism. It came to the Terra Foundation for American Art through the Daniel J. Terra Collection.

Where it works
