Story
A twisted apple tree, heavy with red fruit, rises beside a flowing river framed by autumn-colored leaves and scattered wildflowers, all set beneath a sky tinted yellow. The scene unfolds with warm, layered color that suggests the turning of the season along the water's edge. This piece, titled Apple Tree with Red Fruit, was made in 1902 and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Its creator, Paul Elie Ranson, was a French painter associated with Symbolism, also remembered for Witch with a black cat. One detail worth noticing is how the gnarled, knotted trunk contrasts with the softer curves of the riverbank, giving the whole composition a sense of tension between rough bark and gentle terrain. The red fruit punctuates the foliage, drawing the eye through the autumn colors toward the glowing yellow sky above.
