Story

A twisting plant with dark, gnarled roots rises amid blue irises and scattered yellow blossoms, its foliage a mix of yellow-green tones topped with golden flowers, all set beneath a clouded sky. Paul Elie Ranson painted this scene in oil in 1899. Ranson (1861–1909) was a French painter associated with Symbolism, also known for his work Witch with a black cat.
