Story

A yellow thistle rises above the earth, its roots visible beneath the soil, while smaller flowering plants grow nearby and a forested landscape stretches behind them. The composition reads like a stylized botanical study rather than a strict transcription of nature. Painted in oil in 1899, the work comes from Paul Elie Ranson, a French artist associated with Symbolism, whose other work includes Witch with a black cat.
