Story
Three geometric figures made of thin black lines stand against a warm ochre ground, framed by borders in green-grey tones. The forms appear almost like linked diagrams or stick figures, abstract rather than representational, set out with careful spacing across the paper. The piece, titled Abstract Trio, was made in 1923 using watercolor and transferred printing ink on paper, bordered with gouache and ink and mounted on cardboard, and it is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Berggruen Klee Collection gift of 1984. Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist associated with the Bauhaus, also produced the notable work Angelus Novus. One detail worth noticing is how the ochre background sets off the dark linework, giving the three figures a sense of floating within the painted border.
