Story
A figure built from geometric shapes dominates the composition, rendered in pink and red tones against a beige and blue backdrop. Circular eyes stare out from the form, while a heart shape hangs suspended within its structure, giving the body an abstract, almost musical rhythm. Paul Klee made this piece in oil on burlap in 1932. Klee, German-Swiss (1879–1940), worked within the Bauhaus movement. The painting entered The Phillips Collection's holdings through acquisition in 1940.
