Story

Dark curved lines trace stylized arches across a grid-like composition, set against pink fabric patterned with red stars. The arches seem to break from their orderly rows, giving the surface a sense of motion within structure. Paul Klee made the piece in charcoal on cloth mounted on paper in 1937. Klee, German-Swiss, worked within Bauhaus and Expressionism contexts. The piece entered the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from the Estate of Karl Nierendorf, by purchase.
