Story
A brown bird marked with touches of orange moves off to the left, crossing a quiet field of beige, gray, and blue shapes arranged into simple geometric patterns. The piece was made in 1926 using sprayed and brushed gouache on paper, bordered with gouache and mounted on cardboard, and it is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Berggruen Klee gift. Paul Klee (1879–1940) worked within the Bauhaus movement, bringing its sense of structure and color into this composition. Looking closely, the bird's rounded body and thin legs stand out against the flattened, almost abstract ground, giving the impression of a creature drifting through a landscape built from soft blocks of tone rather than literal scenery.
