Story
Rectangular bands of red, purple, and gold interlock across the surface, their layered geometric shapes and thin linear marks suggesting the folds of fabric, almost like a woven tapestry. The piece is watercolor on madder- and glue-primed linen, bordered with watercolor on the cardboard mount, made in 1924 by Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist associated with the Bauhaus and Expressionism. It entered the Guggenheim Museum through the Hilla Rebay Collection.
