Story
A grid of horizontal rectangles stretches across the sheet, their tones shifting between yellow, tan, brown, black, and white in an uneven, overlapping arrangement that suggests layered strata or stacked blocks. The composition was made using watercolour over pencil on paper, laid down by the artist on board, in 1929. Paul Klee, a German-Swiss artist (1879–1940), worked within the Bauhaus movement.
