Story
A dark green field holds a drifting arrangement of fish, round celestial shapes, and plant-like forms, mixed with ochre and blue tones that glow against the shadowed background. The piece, titled Fish Magic, was made in 1925 using oil and watercolor on canvas on panel, and it is held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It came to the museum through the Louise and Walter Arensberg Collection. The work was created by Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist associated with the Bauhaus. Looking closely, the fish and orbs appear to float freely across the composition, scattered without any fixed sense of ground or gravity.
