Story

A ghostly fish takes shape through black and white checkered patterning, its angular body hovering above a strip of blue water set against a rust-orange backdrop. The checkered surface gives the creature a geometric, almost architectural presence within the warm field of color. This oil painting was made in 1933 by Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist associated with the Bauhaus and with Expressionism.
