Story

Tan and brown lines divide the surface into small geometric compartments, their edges set against a beige, textured ground. The shapes overlap and interlock, forming a loose grid of irregular cells across the page. This watercolour on paper was made in 1939 by Paul Klee, a German-Swiss artist (1879–1940) associated with the Bauhaus and with Expressionism, whose work also includes Angelus Novus.
