Story

A small town takes shape as an arrangement of geometric blocks and towers, their colorful forms set against an open blue sky and rendered in a mix of earthy and pastel hues with touches of primary color, suggesting a village seen through abstraction. Painted in watercolor on paper in 1928 by Paul Klee (1879–1940), the work reflects his German-Swiss background and his ties to the Bauhaus and Expressionism. The piece came to the museum as a gift.

Where it works
