Story
A rounded figure with a blue head and circular eyes gazes out from a tangle of organic shapes rendered in earthy browns, rust, and touches of blue, all set against a rough, woven-looking surface. The forms seem to drift and curl around the central figure, giving the composition a loose, biomorphic rhythm. The piece was made in 1939 using tempera and oil on burlap, and it is held at the Beyeler Foundation. The artist, Paul Klee (1879–1940), was associated with the Bauhaus. Notice how the coarse texture of the burlap shows through the paint, giving the earth-toned shapes an unfinished, almost woven quality that pulls attention to the surface itself as much as to the figure it depicts.
