Story
Small blocks of red, pink, and cream arrange themselves across the surface, with rounded rose shapes scattered among the geometric fields. The forms sit close together, built from careful strokes rather than loose brushwork, giving the whole composition a sense of structure. This piece, titled Rose Garden, was made by Paul Klee in 1920 using oil and pen on paper mounted on cardboard, and it is held at the Lenbachhaus. Klee, who lived from 1879 to 1940, worked within Expressionism, and his output also includes Angelus Novus. One detail worth noticing is how the circular rose motifs break up the straight edges of the geometric shapes, softening the pattern and keeping the eye moving between curved and angular forms throughout the composition.
