Sealed Woman

Story

A woman's face appears in profile, eyes shut and mouth closed, rendered in soft pale tones set against a golden-brown textured ground. The abstraction gives the head a muted, enclosed quality, as if sealed away from the viewer. Paul Klee made this piece using watercolour and pen and ink on Ingres laid paper laid down on the artist's mount in 1930. Klee, German-Swiss (1879–1940), worked within Bauhaus, Color Field, and Expressionism contexts.

Where it works
