Story
An abstract theatrical composition unfolds in layered forms suggesting architecture and stagecraft, rendered in greens, browns, reds, and blacks, built up with fine linear detail and varied surface textures. The piece was painted in oil in 1922. Its arrangement of flattened structures and patterned fields reflects the Bauhaus setting in which the German-Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879–1940) worked, alongside his associations with Color Field and Expressionist tendencies.
