The Way to the Citadel

Story

Blocky, uneven shapes crowd the canvas, each outlined in dark lines and filled with muted greens, browns, pinks, and blues, forming an abstract geometric arrangement rather than a clear scene. The piece is an oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, made in 1937 by Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist linked to the Bauhaus and Expressionism. The Phillips Collection holds the work, which it acquired in 1940.
