Story

A harbor fills with sailboats, their rigging strung with bright flags, dabs of blue, green, yellow, and red building the water and sky into shimmering texture. The composition captures a fleet gathered at Groix for a blessing ceremony, painted in oil in 1923. Paul Signac (1863–1935), a French painter associated with pointillism, created the scene using small touches of color. The piece entered the museum through combined acquisition funds and a gift of funds.
