Story

A quiet city street stretches into shadow, its surface built from countless small dark marks that gather into dusky tones. A single figure stands alone along the sidewalk, barely distinguished from the surrounding gloom. The scene captures a corner of Rue Vercingetorix. Paul Signac made this drawing in 1885 using ContÈ pencil on paper. Signac, born in 1863 and died in 1935, worked within pointillism, a French approach built on stippled marks.
