Story

Boats rest beside a bridge spanning calm harbor water, the whole scene built from small dabs of blue, purple, pink, and yellow that shimmer across the surface. This oil painting dates from 1907 and depicts the port of Rotterdam. The French painter Paul Signac (1863–1935) worked in the pointillist style, applying color in distinct touches to capture the light and movement of the harbor.
