Story

A river bends past trees along its banks, the whole scene built from small dabs of purple, blue, pink, and yellow that shimmer across water and foliage alike. The composition captures a quiet riverside stretch rendered in oil in 1903. Paul Signac (1863–1935), a French painter associated with pointillism, created this work using that dotted, luminous technique.
