Story

A busy city block fills the frame, where a fuel stop and a children's play area sit tucked among tightly packed brick buildings rendered in warm reds, pinks, and browns beneath an open blue sky. Painted in oil in 1983, the scene carries a crowded, close-up view of everyday urban life. Ralph Fasanella (1914–1997), an American painter also known for Subway Riders, worked as a trade unionist alongside his art.

Where it works
