Story
A man dressed in a green shirt and brown trousers is held in a crucified pose, his arms stretched wide, set against a dense web of city life. Around his figure, blocks of buildings, windows, and small painted scenes of urban activity crowd the composition in tones of brown, green, and red. The piece, titled Iceman Crucified #4, was painted in 1958 in oil and is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, having come to the collection from the artist's estate. Ralph Fasanella (1914–1997) was an American painter and trade unionist, also known for his work Subway Riders. One detail worth noticing is how the man's outstretched pose seems fused into the surrounding architecture, as though his body is just another structure holding up the crowded city around him.
