May Day

Story

Seen from above, a dense city street fills with marching bands, parade floats, and thousands of figures rendered in bold reds, blues, and greens, their massed presence surrounding tightly packed buildings during a May Day gathering. Ralph Fasanella painted this oil work in 1948. An American painter and trade unionist (1914–1997), he is also known for Subway Riders. The piece came to the Fenimore Art Museum as a gift from Ralph and Eva Fasanella.
