Story

A dense urban scene fills the canvas, with buildings crowded together, a domed Capitol structure rising among them, and crowds of people moving beneath a bright magenta sky. The colors are bold and the composition layers architecture and figures across the whole surface. Painted in oil in 1963, the piece is held by the American Folk Art Museum. Its creator, Ralph Fasanella (1914–1997), was an American painter and trade unionist, also known for Subway Riders.

Where it works
