Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel)

Story

The towering landmark of Paris dissolves into a mosaic of broken angles and shifting planes, its iron frame reconstructed through overlapping shards of orange, yellow, and cool gray. Surrounding rooftops and structures seem to tilt and interlock with the tower itself, as if the whole city were caught mid-vibration. This oil painting dates from 1911 and belongs to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, having entered its collection through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Founding Collection as a gift. Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), a French painter associated with Orphism, brought a distinct energy to this fragmented urban view. Notice how the warm tones of the structure seem to push forward against the cooler surrounding hues, giving the composition a sense of pulsing movement despite its rigid geometric structure.
