Story
The Eiffel Tower rises in broken, overlapping planes, its iron lattice scattered among the shapes of surrounding trees, rendered in shades of brown, white, and gray. The composition breaks the tower into angled fragments that blend with the foliage around its base, giving the whole scene a fractured, layered rhythm. This oil painting was made in 1910 by Robert Delaunay and is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, having entered the collection through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Founding Collection. Delaunay, who lived from 1885 to 1941, worked in Orphism and also created Hommage to Blériot. Looking closely, the tower's structure seems to merge with the branches around it, so that solid iron and natural form become almost indistinguishable within the muted palette.
