Bushfire dreaming

Story

Bands of color run across the surface in yellow, red, blue, white, and brown, laid out in horizontal stripes that stretch the width of the canvas. A dark, curving line cuts through the composition, dividing it vertically and breaking the steady rhythm of the stripes. This work, titled Bushfire dreaming, was made in 2003 using synthetic polymer paint on canvas, and it is held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The artist, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, was an Australian First Nation painter born in 1943 who died in 2023. Looking closely, the curved dark line stands out against the flat, even stripes, pulling the eye away from the horizontal pattern and giving the whole surface a sense of movement and tension between structure and disruption.
