Story
A cluster of fishing boats rests at anchor in a harbor, their tall masts rising against the sky while the water below carries soft reflections. The scene is built from cream, blue, green, and brown tones, with the paint applied in loose, visible strokes that give the whole composition a lively surface texture. This picture, titled Boats at Royan, was painted in 1910 in oil and is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. The artist, Samuel John Peploe, lived from 1871 to 1935 and worked as a painter in Britain. Looking closely, one notices how the brushwork around the hulls and masts stays loose and energetic, letting the color blocks suggest form rather than defining it with hard outlines, which gives the harbor scene a sense of movement despite the stillness of the moored vessels.
