Tulips - The Blue Jug

Story

A cluster of red and white tulips rises from a blue jug, set alongside fruit on a surface of deep purple, all placed against a glowing red backdrop. The composition presses the flowers, jug, and fruit close together, letting the warm red field push forward around the cooler blue vessel. This piece was painted in 1919 using oil, and it is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. The artist, Samuel John Peploe, lived from 1871 to 1935 and worked as a British painter. Looking closely, the petals of the tulips show quick, loaded strokes that catch light differently against the solid blue of the jug, giving the still life a sense of movement despite its fixed arrangement of everyday objects.
