Story
A lush gathering of blossoms fills a vase at the center of the composition, their petals rendered in bright, varied hues. Beside the vase rest grapes and other fruit, along with a wine glass, all set against a deep, dark backdrop that pushes the color forward. This oil painting was created in 1850 and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The artist, Severin Roesen, painted this piece as part of his work in still life. Looking closely, the grapes catch soft points of light, their rounded forms adding a sense of weight beside the delicate, open flowers, while the wine glass reflects a faint gleam that draws the eye toward the quiet space between the fruit and blossoms, grounding the entire arrangement against the shadowed setting behind it with a subtle, careful balance of detail and depth.
