Story

A horse and a monkey pause together beneath the hanging branches of a willow, set within a quiet landscape painted in soft browns, tans, and cream. The scene unfolds in ink and color on silk, part of an album devoted to birds and animals. Shen Nanpin, a Chinese painter of the Qing dynasty who lived from 1682 to 1760, created this work, now held at the Phoenix Art Museum.
