Searching for Fireflies

Two figures dressed in traditional Japanese garments move through darkness in search of fireflies, one of them carrying a lantern that casts light across surrounding autumn plants. The scene unfolds at night, with the dark background heightening the sense of quiet stillness around the pair. This color woodblock print, in the chūban format, was created in 1768 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Its maker, Suzuki Harunobu, born in Japan and living from 1725 to 1770, worked in the ukiyo-e tradition and contributed to the nishiki-e style of printmaking. One detail worth noticing is how the lantern's glow stands out against the darkened autumn foliage, drawing the eye toward the searching figures.
