A small boat glides across the water, its two rowers pulling hard with their oars as they round a blue marker. Trees line the far bank, and onlookers gather to watch the race unfold under open sky. This oil painting dates from 1873 and is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its creator, Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), worked within French Realism and was an American painter.
