Cowboys in the Badlands

Story

A horseman and his horse pause atop a rise, surveying a sweeping expanse of eroded, rugged terrain rendered in muted earth tones and soft blues. The scene stretches wide beneath an open sky, emphasizing the isolation of the rider against the rough landscape. This oil painting was completed in 1888 by Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), an American painter and photographer associated with French Realism.
