Story

A lone rower pulls his wooden scull across water rendered in muted blue-gray tones, set beneath a pale sky. His head is covered in red, a bright accent against the mute surroundings, as he leans into the stroke with visible effort. The painting was created in 1874 by Thomas Eakins, working in oil, and today it is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. Eakins, who lived from 1844 to 1916, also painted Max Schmitt in a Single Scull, another work set on the water. Looking closely, the contrast between the still sky and the rippling surface beneath the boat gives the scene a quiet sense of motion and balance worth lingering over.
