Story

A single rower glides across a quiet stretch of river, a bridge arching behind him, trees lining the bank, and small figures visible in the distance. The scene is rendered in muted browns and grays, giving the water and sky a subdued, still quality. Painted in oil by Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), an American artist associated with French Realism, the work remains known as one of his notable paintings.
