The piece was painted in oil on wood in 1916 by Tom Thomson, a Canadian painter who lived from 1877 to 1917 and also worked as an architectural drafter and printmaker. He is also known for The Jack Pine and The West Wind. The painting is held at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
