Story
A dense stand of dark trees rises along the edges of a pale, winding river, with the water glowing in contrast against the surrounding blues, greens, and blacks. This piece is a study for "Northern River," made in 1914 using gouache, brush and ink over graphite on illustration board, and it is held at the Art Gallery of Ontario, having entered the collection through a purchase in 1982. Tom Thomson, who lived from 1877 to 1917 and worked as a Canadian painter, also created the notable work The Jack Pine. Worth noticing is how the artist balances the stark white highlights of the river against the heavy darkness of the trees, giving the composition a strong sense of depth and quiet tension between light and shadow.
