The West Wind

Story

A lone pine, its dark green needles rough against a reddish-brown trunk, leans sharply over a choppy lake, with mountains fading into the distance beneath a sky thick with clouds. The tree seems shaped by constant wind off the water. Rendered in oil, the piece hangs at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Tom Thomson, who lived 1877–1917, also painted The Jack Pine, another notable work.
