Story
Deep purple irises rise in the foreground, their stalks framing a quiet wetland that stretches toward a cluster of distant trees under a soft, pale sky. This color woodcut was made in 1857 as part of a series depicting famous places in Edo. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), associated with the Kasei culture and the Utagawa school, created the design. The print entered its collection through the bequest of John H. Van Vleck.
