Story
Travelers hurry across a wooden bridge under a sudden downpour, slanted rain falling over hazy mountains and a wide stretch of water rendered in muted greens, yellows, and blues. This woodblock print was made in 1857 by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), part of his Edo views series. Hiroshige worked within the Utagawa school during the Kasei culture period, and also created Eight Views of Ōmi. The piece entered the San Diego Museum of Art as part of a bequest from Mrs. Cora Timken Burnett.
Where it works
