Story

A crowded shrine hall fills the composition, packed with figures dressed in traditional robes beneath hanging red lanterns, the architecture rendered in bands of blue, red, and cream. This woodcut, titled Gathering of gods at the great shrine at Izumo, was made in 1857. Its creator, Utagawa Sadahide (1807–1873), worked within the Utagawa school, a tradition tied to Japan's ukiyo-e printmaking.
