Story
A lone peasant stands amid an enclosed wheat field, with mountains rising behind and a small village tucked into the distance. The brushwork curls and twists across the canvas, mixing blues, golds, and earthy browns into a restless surface of color. This oil painting was completed in 1889 and is held today at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where it came to the collection as a gift given in memory of Daniel W. and Elizabeth C. Marmon. Vincent van Gogh (1859–1891) painted it during a period marked by his distinctive expressive style. One detail worth noticing is how the swirling strokes in the sky and field seem to pull the mountains and village into the same rhythmic motion as the wheat itself.
