Story
Rolling fields of green wheat stretch beneath a sky filled with heavy clouds, the whole scene built from swirling strokes of green, blue, and white. The land seems to ripple and churn under the moving sky, as though the brushwork itself carries the wind across the fields. This piece was made in 1890 using oil paint, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. It was created by Vincent van Gogh, whose work includes the painting Green Wheat Fields, Auvers. Looking closely, the clouds and the crops share the same curling rhythm, so that sky and earth seem to move together in one continuous motion. The density of the brushstrokes gives the whole composition a sense of constant movement, as if the fields were caught mid-breath under the shifting weather above them.
